A boy named Sue…meet Haggard and Cash!
Meet the guardians to the girls: Haggard & Cash
It’s only logical to get cats when you have chickens or live in the country right….well at least that was my excuse to my husband!
We rescued these cuties but also rescued the fleas that came with them! But we didn’t let the fleas stay with us too long, lol! We named all of our girls female country singers…so we decided since these guys were meant to watch over the girls, we would name them Haggard and Cash!
I have always heard when you move kittens you should keep them inclosed for a few weeks so that they learn that this is their new home and do not venture away! We had the perfect place (or so I thought) a screened in porch. They could get plenty of fresh air and room to play! Until they started CLIMBING UP THE SCREEN! I literally about lost it when I looked out the door and saw them both half way up the screen! I thought I did well by putting cardboard down low to keep them from climbing, but they were pretty resourceful! We also started hearing raccoons at night trying to get to them…so inside the garage they went!
After about 3 weeks in the garage, they were free to roam about! And boy did they love it! They were curious little rascals and into everything…including seeing what the chickens were about!
Little rascals!
First of many vet visits to come…
In case you don’t know…cats really have 9 lives! One day Cash decided to jump off the garage refrigerator and landed on a chair that Haggard was under, which lead to the first trip to the vet! We were pretty sure that his leg was broke so we decided to take him in. At that point, we decided to take them both in to get them their shots. Of course the vet informs me that if we live in the country it is best to “fix” them so that we don’t have stray cats flocking around. So I agreed, but also asked to keep all things to a minimum for payment as these were just outside barn cats!
I received a phone call a few hours later informing me that it was going to be about $200 more due to the fact that Haggard and Cash aren’t boys…they are both GIRLS! Oops! Ya’ll, I really don’t know how we missed that! LOL! I promise we looked and looked but I just couldn’t see “anything” so I assumed they were girls!
When I picked up Byrdie from school and informed her of the news, I asked if she preferred to change their names…she said nope she was fine with Haggard and Cash!
Nurse Byrdie
After that incident, there were plenty more. Fights with bobcats, fights with snakes, etc, but the worse was when Robert ran Haggard…in the golf cart…with Byrdie!!
I was sitting on the porch watching the two of them coming home from fishing at the back in one of our takes. I look up just in time to see what looks like some sort of small animal being thrown from the driver side of the golf cart! When they got home, I could see the look in Robert’s eyes! I waited until Byrdie was no longer around and asked what was the animal? He said, “I ran over the cat because she ran right in front of me (to his benefit it was almost dark and hard to see)! Byrdie asked what the bump was and I told her we ran over a rock!” If eyes could pop out, mine would have at that moment!
She was fine and acting normal! But I will say after that incident she became a pretty skinny cat and never gained her weight back! So I guess that is one way of dieting, but I wouldn’t recommend it!
These poor kitties don’t have a chance of walking when she is around!
