Chicken Math

Because doesn’t everyone let their chickens inside the house?!?

Like I said before, chicken math is a real thing!

We started our original flock with 8, however we learned A LOT with those girls! They were all hens (which I was very thankful for especially being our first go round with chicks) but we unfortunately never were able to get eggs from any…they all died! Like I said, we learned a lot! So on to our next flock….of 16!

Predators out in the country was the problem! Our tiny coop just couldn’t keep them protected! We let them free range all day and it night they would go into the coop, but those pesky raccoons just kept picking them off one by one! We did loose one to a hawk as well! They were just too tiny to protect themselves! So after this round of chickens…we decided we need cats as well to help guard the chickens and keep the snakes away! (Will be posting in a future blog tips to keeping your girls safe!)

Byrdie is really a good chickie Mommy! She rotates holding each chicken about every 15-20 mins. We do this so that when they are out and about, they will come to us! With our original flock, we got them when they were older and they didn’t really care to come to her easily. So with this group of girls, we trained them differently! Basically from the minute they see us, they flock to us and follow us around! (Stay tuned for some chicken tips in future blogs!)

But this is what happens when you leave town for the weekend and leave your husband and son in charge of the chickens….

Byrdie and I left town for the weekend and left specific instructions for the chickens.

  • Keep water clean and full (due to the fact chickens have to stay warm with the heat lamp, you must keep them hydrated)

  • Keep their food full

  • No need to clean the shavings…we did it before we left so they will be good for a few days

Funny thing happened while we were gone…they started to fly out! Ha! How ironic is that! We promised him it would be easy peasy! All was well we we got home, and the chickens were moved into the garage!
